38. Benefits of waking up early. (Part 2 of a series)

Welcome back! In the last post, we discussed a few of the numerous benefits to waking up early. Once you make it a habit, you’ll discover even more, thus making it easier to continue.

But before we begin, let’s examine a few of the “challenges” that are bound to come up. After all, waking up at a ridiculously early hour is not something most people do naturally. It requires a fair amount of discipline, and just like anything, there are some trade-offs that come with the territory.

Let’s begin with the most obvious, but often ignored challenge…

To get up early, you must be willing to go to bed early. This one was tough for me personally. Years of late nights in my 20’s and early 30’s trains a person to be a night owl. Honestly, it took me a few months to adapt to going to bed early, and it was not without setbacks. You have to be willing to give up some television time, depending on how much sleep you really need. Me, I need 7.5 to 8 hours. I don’t function very well on less. You might be eating dinner earlier than what you’re used to, so you can meet your bedtime goal. Whatever you do later at night, you might have to do it earlier.

Insomnia. I have some experience in this, and I can tell you the best cure for most “insomniacs”. Ready? Get up at 4:30am for 5 days in a row, and stay up once you get out of bed. I PROMISE you will not have an issue sleeping when bedtime comes!

Take your sleep seriously. I wrote another blog post specifically about sleep, and it goes into much more detail. Check it out here…

Be prepared for friends and family to resist. It can show up either with a bang, or it can be subtle. Remember, you are setting a habit that most people don’t have the discipline to do on a consistent basis. Getting up early shows you are serious about your health, your business, and your life in general. Know this going in…whenever you try to improve yourself, there will always be people who try to get you off track. It doesn’t mean they are bad people, and most of the time it is a subconscious effort on their part. They don’t even know they are doing it, but it’s still there. Keep an eye out for it, learn to recognize it, and keep focused on your goals.

Forming and breaking habits are not easy, that’s why I wanted to review some of the issues that might come up when you’re attempting to become an early riser. If you know and expect these challenges, you won’t be surprised when they come up. You’ll also know how to handle them.

Getting up early, in my opinion, is one of the best habits you can ever form. The benefits are immeasurable, and you will absolutely love the person you become. I wish you the best in this journey. Drop me a line, let me know if you have a challenge, and I would also love to hear your success stories!
